HSE Updates A Recipe for Safety
The food and drink manufacturing industry is comprised of more than 30 individual sectors with unique challenges. Because of this, injury rates across these sectors vary considerably. However, research shows that 96% of all injuries in the food and drink manufacturing industries are caused by 12 key issues.
Managing these 12 issues, which include machinery, working at height, slips and trips and work-related stress, will help companies significantly reduce injuries and their associated costs. As part of an ongoing initiative to reduce injuries in the food and drink industries, U.K.'s Health and Safety Executive and a working group of the Food and Drink Manufacture Health and Safety Forum published A Recipe for Safety. This document analyzes the 12 key issues in food and drink manufacturing and offers guidance for companies to set realistic goals to improve safety and health. Previously published in 2005, A Recipe for Safety, acts as a comprehensive guide for workers, supervisors, managers and OSH professionals in the food and drink industries to help companies concentrate on preventing the main causes of injuries and ill health. The updated version covers main health and safety hazards in the food and drink industries and gives practical advice to help industry stakeholders address and manage associated health and safety risks.
