What to do if there is a Dangerous Situation at Work

What to do if there is a Dangerous Situation at Work

If you believe working conditions are unsafe or unhealthful, we recommend that you bring the conditions to your employer's attention, if possible.
You may file a complaint with OSHA concerning a hazardous working condition at any time. However, you should not leave the worksite merely because you have filed a complaint. If the condition clearly presents a risk of death or serious physical harm, there is not sufficient time for OSHA to inspect, and, where possible, you have brought the condition to the attention of your employer, you may have a legal right to refuse to work in a situation in which you would be exposed to the hazard.

Worker Fatalities Reported to Federal and State OSHA

Before OSHA was created 43 years ago, an estimated 14,000 workers were killed on the job every year. Today, workplaces are much safer and healthier, going from 38 fatal injuries a day to 12. But there is still much work to be done.
The tables below provide summaries of work-related fatalities and incidents resulting in the hospitalization of three or more workers reported to OSHA. Employers must report these incidents to OSHA within eight hours. The summaries in the table record the name and address of the worker’s employer, the date of the fatality or catastrophe and a brief description. These summaries include only preliminary information, as reported to OSHA Area Offices or to states that operate OSHA-approved State Plans. OSHA investigates all work-related fatalities catastrophes in all covered workplaces. (For more information on workplace fatalities, see the BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries.)

AGC URGES CONSTRUCTION FIRMS TO IMPLEMENT 13-STEP SAFETY PLAN

The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and Carolinas Associated General Contractors (CAGC) are urging commercial construction firms across the country to act on 13 specific steps to further improve workplace safety.
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and Carolinas Associated General Contractors (CAGC) are urging commercial construction firms across the country to act on 13 specific steps to further improve workplace safety.
AGC officials said the new safety measures were needed to address a growing influx of new and inexperienced workers that is contributing to an increase in the number of construction fatalities nationwide and in the Carolinas.
The safety recommendations include requiring every worker on a project to complete a safety orientation session, providing workers with easy-to-read ID tags that identify their level of safety training and giving workers "Stop Work" cards they can issue to halt activity on a project when they spot safety hazards. Other measures include holding monthly employee-led safety training lunch and learn sessions and providing specific training in response to all safety incidents that occur on a job site.
Recommendations are based on an in-depth analysis of effective safety programs the association performed as part of its Willis Construction Safety Excellence Awards. Turmail noted that the association and Willis looked at what makes winning firms'—including local Charlotte, N.C., firm WB Moore Electrical Contractors.

Most food industry employees work when ill, survey finds

   Austin, TX – A majority of food industry employees go to work when sick, according to a new survey commissioned by training and consulting company Alchemy Systems.
   In the survey of more than 1,200 workers across the food supply chain, 51 percent reported that they always or frequently go to work when ill, a stark contrast to managers’ belief that only 18 percent of workers show up when sick. Many workers said they could not afford to lose pay by staying home (45 percent) or they did not want to let their co-workers down (46 percent).
   “Managers and supervisors need to better communicate why it’s OK to stay home when sick,” Alchemy Systems CEO Jeff Eastman said in a press release.
   According to the Washington-based advocacy group National Partnership for Women & Families, 43 million U.S. workers lackpaid sick leave. Supporters of paid sick leave, including theDepartment of Labor, claim it can reduce the spread of workplace contagions, boost productivity and lower health care costs.

What Health and Safety Engineers Do

Health and safety engineers develop procedures and design systems to prevent people from getting sick or injured and to keep property from being damaged. They combine knowledge of systems engineering and of health or safety to make sure that chemicals, machinery, software, furniture, and consumer products will not cause harm to people or buildings.

Duties

Health and safety engineers typically do the following:
  • Review plans and specifications for new machinery and equipment to make sure they meet safety requirements
  • Identify and correct potential hazards by inspecting facilities, machinery, and safety equipment
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of various industrial control mechanisms
  • Ensure that a building or product complies with health and safety regulations, especially after an inspection that required changes
  • Install safety devices on machinery or direct the installation of these devices
  • Review employee safety programs and recommend improvements
  • Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes
Health and safety engineers also investigate industrial accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine their causes and to determine whether the incidents could have been or can be prevented. They interview employers and employees to learn about work environments and incidents that lead to accidents or injuries. They also evaluate the corrections that were made to remedy violations found during health inspections.

To achieve our ultimate target of zero serious accidents, our policies focus on two areas: workplace safety and technological risk management.
·         Consolidate the decline in the number of workplace accidents, which decreased 57% between 2009 and 2013, surpassing our original target of 25%.
·         Establish and apply a common set of Golden Rules across Total, to maintain constant awareness of the inherent risks of our business.
·         Strengthen our processes for managing technological risks, by using technical standards recognized by the industry to maintain the integrity of our industrial and logistics facilities.
·         Share best practices widely, report anomalies and near misses consistently, and use feedback in a more formal way, to embed our safety culture.

Outdoor working

Outdoor workers need to take special care of their eyes, especially those working in agriculture or forestry. Not only do twigs and low-hanging branches pose a risk, loose soil and sand can be a major irritant, whereas still bodies of water can potentially contain nasty pathogens, such as acanthamoeba, which causes corneal ulcers. Preparation, as ever, is the best protection. Sunglasses can provide some basic protection, though for bigger jobs protective goggles may be necessary. It is also a good idea to ensure eyewash is available in your first aid kit.

Allow time to react

Many speed related motorcycle crashes happen in good conditions with no other vehicles involved. Even experienced riders need time to react to changing situations on the road. Sometimes, you might be going too fast for the road conditions, even though you may be riding below the speed limit. It takes three-quarters of a second to make a decision to act once you see a hazard, and the same time again for the action to be effective.
At 60 km/h, you will have travelled 25 metres in that second and a half before you even start to brake. Riders who are tired, distracted or affected by alcohol or drugs will take much longer to react.
Riding at a speed where you have time to react to unexpected hazards will reduce your risk of a crash. Cars have four tyres in contact with the road and can stop much faster than motorcycles, so riders should always keep a three-second gap  from the vehicle in front.

How do I do a risk assessment?

To do a risk assessment, you need to understand what, in your business, might cause harm to people and decide whether you are doing enough to prevent that harm. Once you have decided that, you need to identify and prioritise putting in place, appropriate and sensible control measures.

Start by:
- identifying what can harm people in your workplace
- identifying who might be harmed and how
- evaluating the risks and deciding on the appropriate controls, taking into account the controls you - already have in place
- recording your risk assessment
- reviewing and updating your assessment

Transportation risk management is based on systematic analyses of accidents, which then generate safety improvement plans.

Transportation risk management is based on systematic analyses of accidents, which then generate safety improvement plans.
In 2009, for all of its businesses combined, TOTAL transported approximately 210 tons of feedstock (crude oil, natural gas, etc.), "intermediate" products (for example, liquid hydrocarbon such as feedstock for steam cracking units) and "finished" products (fuels, LPG…).
Almost all these transfers involve transportation of hazardous materials such as liquid and liquefied hydrocarbons, as well as petrochemical and chemical products. The hazardous nature of the products transported, their diversity and variety are the most important factors in our "transport risk" analysis.
The other factors taken into consideration come from analyses of our accident records. These analyses reveal that initiatives concerning transportation by land (road, rail) should be a top priority, more specifically road transport in Africa.

Agency cites Ashley Furniture for alleged safety violations

WHITEHALL, Wis. (AP) — A federal safety agency has again cited Ashley Furniture Industries Inc. for alleged safety violations at one of its Wisconsin factories.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration alleged Monday that Arcadia-based Ashley failed to protect workers from moving machine parts at its upholstery plant in Whitehall.
The agency contends Ashley failed to put in place procedures at the plant to keep machines from accidentally starting up while workers cleaned them, changed blades or cleared jams, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1jQABH6 ) reported.
OSHA is proposing $431,000 in fines. The furniture maker currently is contesting an additional $1.8 million in proposed fines from previous inspections at its factory in Arcadia, in western Wisconsin.
Ashley called the latest allegations "outrageous," and said it "will vigorously challenge" the citations.
"At all times, Ashley has machine guards in place that are provided by the manufacturer and, in some cases, the company has gone beyond what manufacturers put in place by installing additional guards and implementing special procedures to protect workers," Paul Waters, legal counsel for the firm, said in the statement.
Early this year, OSHA staff accused Ashley of 38 safety violations at its Arcadia factory and sought nearly $1.8 million in fines.
In July, OSHA cited Ashley again, for allegedly failing to report an accident in which an employee lost a finger. The agency staff is seeking $83,200 in fines in that case.
Ashley is contesting the citations and fines in both cases.

What is WHMIS education and training?

What is WHMIS education and training?
Education and training under WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) can be thought of as two separate parts. Education refers to the instruction of workers in general information such as how WHMIS works and the hazards of controlled products. Training refers to the instruction in site-specific information such as work and emergency procedures. Both education and training are an important part of understanding the hazards that may be present at your workplace.

The information on this page is aimed mainly at workers

  • You could be risking damage to nerves, blood vessels and joints of the hand, wrist and arm if you work regularly with hand-held or hand-guided power tools for more than a few hours each day.
  • Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) caused by exposure to vibration at work is preventable, but once the damage is done it is permanent.
  • The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 were introduced to better protect workers from vibration at work and came into force in July 2005.

Am I at risk?

You are at risk if you regularly use hand-held or handguided power tools and machines such as:
  • Concrete breakers, concrete pokers;
  • Sanders, grinders, disc cutters;
  • Hammer drills;
  • Chipping hammers;
  • Chainsaws, brush cutters, hedge trimmers,
  • Powered mowers;
  • Scabblers or needle guns.
You are also at risk if you hold workpieces, which vibrate while being processed by powered machinery such as pedestal grinders.
You are particularly at risk if you regularly operate:
  • Hammer action tools for more than about 15 minutes per day; or
  • Some rotary and other action tools for more than about one hour per day.
As you are likely to be above the exposure action value set out in the regulations.

What are the early signs and symptoms to look out for?

  • Tingling and numbness in the fingers (which can cause sleep disturbance).
  • Not being able to feel things with your fingers.
  • Loss of strength in your hands (you may be less able to pick up or hold heavy objects).
  • In the cold and wet, the tips of your fingers going white then red and being painful on recovery (vibration white finger).
If you continue to use high-vibration tools these symptoms will probably get worse, for example:
  • The numbness in your hands could become permanent and you won’t be able to feel things at all;
  • You will have difficulty picking up small objects such as screws or nails;
  • The vibration white finger could happen more frequently and affect more of your fingers

    Having moved from seismic exploration into other areas of geophysical research, the new president of the Society of Exploration Geophysics still helps to find oil. But the oil John H. Bradford detects now isn't deep in the earth. It's oil released by accident in frozen seas and trapped beneath ice-a possibility for which the oil and gas industry must be prepared as exploration and development expand in the Arctic. Bradford, a professor in the Department of Geosciences at Boise State University, describes his primary research interest as "quantitative analysis of wave propagation based geophysical data, specifically seismic reflection and ground-penetrating radar (GPR).
