By industry

Specific occupational safety and health risk factors vary depending on the specific sector and industry. Construction workers might be particularly at risk of falls, for instance, whereas fishermen might be particularly at risk of drowning. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics identifies the fishing, aviation, lumber, metalworking, agriculture, mining and transportation industries as among some of the more dangerous for workers. Similarly psychosocial risks such as workplace violence are more pronounced for certain occupational groups such as health care employees, police, correctional officers and teachers.

Programs

A health and safety program is a plan of action designed to prevent injuries and illness at work, and is required under occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation in most Canadian jurisdictions. OH&S programs and management systems can help you meet your requirements, ensure compliance, and create a safe and healthy workplace.

Notice to reader

Part II of the Canada Labour Code deals with occupational health and safety. Its purpose is to "prevent accidents and injury to health arising out of, linked with or occurring in the course of employment at federally regulated employers." One of the issues covered by Part II of the Code and by the related Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations is the matter of ergonomics.
This guide is designed to familiarize employers, members of a policy or work place committee, or health and safety representatives with the regulation in regards to ergonomics.
Under Part XIX of the Regulations entitled Hazard Prevention Program, employers are responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring a program for the prevention of hazards, including ergonomics-related hazards, in the work place with the following components:
  • an implementation plan;
  • a hazard identification and assessment methodology;
  • hazard identification and assessment;
  • preventive measures;
  • employee education; and
  • a program evaluation.
This guide will also help you better understand these regulatory requirements.

Occupational accidents related to cattle slaughter in Mato Grosso, Brazil

If on one hand, the meat segment growth led to an increased demand for hand work and hiring workers for slaughterhouses units in various municipalities of the state, on the other hand, the cooling activity exponentially increased the incidence of workplace accidents in this sector4. Workers poor qualification, as well as the poor working conditions of this sector, are among the main reasons for these accidents5.
This study aimed to analyze the influence of cattle slaughter on occupational accidents and their spatial distribution in municipalities in the state of Mato Grosso, between 2002 and 2008.

hiring workers = contratação de trabalhadores
increased demand  = aumento da demanda
slaughterhouses = matadouros

International Labour Standards on Occupational Safety and Health

The ILO Constitution sets forth the principle that workers should be protected from sickness, disease and injury arising from their employment. Yet for millions of workers the reality is very different. Every day, 6,300 people die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases – more than 2.3 million deaths per year. 317 million accidents occur on the job annually; many of these resulting in extended absences from work. The human cost of this daily adversity is vast and the economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is estimated at 4 per cent of global Gross Domestic Product each year. Employers face costly early retirements, loss of skilled staff, absenteeism, and high insurance premiums due to work-related accidents and diseases. Yet many of these tragedies are preventable through the implementation of sound prevention, reporting and inspection practices. ILO standards on occupational safety and health provide essential tools for governments, employers, and workers to establish such practices and to provide for maximum safety at work. In 2003 the ILO adopted an global strategy to improve occupational safety and health  which included the introduction of a preventive safety and health culture, the promotion and development of relevant instruments, and technical assistance.

Hazard Communication

The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) is now aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). This update to the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) will provide a common and coherent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and safety data sheets. This update will also help reduce trade barriers and result in productivity improvements for American businesses that regularly handle, store, and use hazardous chemicals while providing cost savings for American businesses that periodically update safety data sheets and labels for chemicals covered under the hazard communication standard

Occupational disease

Occupational disease
Occupational diseases are acute, recurring or chronic health problems caused or aggravated by work conditions or practices. Preventing or reducing work-related disease is a focus of the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012–2022, which identifies six priority work-related disorders. Research undertaken prior to 2012 focused on the priority work-related disorders identified in the National OHS Strategy 2002–2012.
Obtaining accurate and useful occupational disease information is challenging, costly and time consuming. Safe Work Australia is exploring a range of ways to collect data on occupational diseases and the workplace hazards that cause them.

SAFETY TRAINING

Safety training occupies the core of any workplace safety program. It’s the first step in preventing injuries and fatalities, but it’s far from once-and-done. Safety managers have to refresh employee training all the time. In this section you’ll find the latest research and trends in safety training. Also included: How employee training (or lack of it) contributed to companies’ safety experiences.
